Manchester City have a surprisingly poor record in the biggest matches of the 2023-24 season so far, with just two wins in nine Premier League matches against ‘Big Six’ opposition this season.
There has been debate as to whether the ‘Top Six’ concept is suitable for the 2024 Premier League following the Newcastle United takeover and qualification for the Champions League. Aston Villa, on the other hand, looks like a strong bet for the 2024 Premier League. Finished in the top four
However, the reality is that the same six clubs (Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea) are the only clubs in the top four, accounting for six of the seven. Combine teams in the most efficient way possible in terms of highest salary payments and transfer fees.
Manchester City had the best record in Biggest Six competitions last season. He was a double for Arsenal, who were instrumental in finishing the season five points clear at the top.
However, they lost their first ‘Best Six’ game of 2023–24 to Arsenal 1–0, their first league defeat against Arsenal since 2015.
The reigning champions have now faced each of their ‘Top six’ rivals and have a somewhat mixed record. Both city rivals Manchester United have won just twice in those eight matches. Elsewhere they equaled Liverpool’s record twice. Tottenham and Chelsea (home and away)
The Gunners’ goalless draw at the Etihad ended Man City’s poor run But questions remain over whether it will be enough to put them over the top in the EPL Tittle Race.
Mauricio Pochettino will need time to turn things around for Chelsea. The Blues are mid-table. But there is still hope for some performance in the big game. Especially the fierce victory and passionate performance against Tottenham.
Liverpool have also been poor in key games this season, with their only win against ‘Best Six’ opposition coming against mid-table Chelsea. Their only two league defeats this season have come in north London. Same games against Tottenham and Arsenal.
